Tangled Up in Blue at Spencer’s BM at the Pierre

Saturday Night Spencer was the theme, infinite disco balls set the vibe, deep blue ocean of color set by Frost bathed us in light, and Spencer’s giant heart was a magnet drawing his family and guests onto the dancefloor.

The apex of the party found a circle of love and joy around the legend Harriette Rose Katz who came onto the dancefloor for what is considered her “last dance” surrounded by her loving family.

It is my highest honor to have documented their family all these years and celebrating Spencer in this magical way was second to none!

Roan

Roan

When it rains, it pours… and in this case it rained awesomeness across the board. I have so many good things to say about this family and this event! Thrilled to complete their Mitzvah hat-trick with gorgeous Roan who broke the mold on every picture taken. Her energy, beauty and zest for celebrating is absolutely contagious – and it all cascades down from super mom and dad, Meg & David who poured their collective creative spirit into this fantastic party. Together with Joseph Todd Events, Frank Alexander, Lawrence Craig catering, and Untouchable Events and my main man, host MC Kevin Thompson, this party was one for the books!

As the swirling lights turned neon deep in the 3rd dance set, a battalion of horns and drums surrounded Roan and giant balloons were released from the 16th story Weylin balcony creating a vision of the ultimate raging party.

While so many amazing moments were part of this event, the heart of it all was Roan’s reading from the Torah. She was poised and made her family proud. We love team Roan beyond – Mazel Tov!!!

The Guatemalan Caravan

The Guatemalan Caravan

The Guatemalan Caravan is NOT coming for America. In fact, an AMERICAN CARAVAN came to Guatemala and found PARADISE! Not since Malta and Albania have I had such a deep connection to a country. Guatemala was beyond words.
So much color in every form – from magnificent fabrics, the freshest fruit, the most exquisite flowers to the most golden sunsets – this journey really had it all. We began our journey with an overnight stay in Guatemala city and then traveled to the most beautiful location in Guatemala, Lake Atitlan which was surrounded by vistas of stunning volcanoes.

While at the farmers market, we purchased plastic balls to give to the poor children who didn’t have any at Christmas time.

We pulled over by the side of the road and dozens of children came running out of the bush to receive toys. It was an unforgettable and completely never to be seen again kind of moment. Look at the faces of pure joy and exhilaration from these poor impoverished children excited for a toy.

During the Christmas holiday, we were introduced to their specialty cocktail, the beer-soaked, bloody mary

As soon as we descended into the valley on Lake Atitlan, we were transformed by the air and sky. It was so clear, it clensed the mind. The temperature was crisp – it felt like 68 degrees all the time. All the food was cooked from scratch. Everything was organic, prepared from sustainable zero-tolerance pesticide farms. The owner of Hotel Atitlan had curated gardens over the past 50 years with flower varieties that date back to the mid 1800s. It would make fans of the Gardens of Versailles smile.

The gardens were truly stunning. Each day, I picked a different garden to practice sunrise yoga.

What would a trip be without family portraits?!!! The gardens of Hotel Atitlan provided magnificent backgrounds.

We spent 10 days in this gorgeous country and found its people could not have been any kinder.

We had the wonderful experience of being guests of an indigenous family so that we could connect with the locals over a home cooked meal that truly bound our humanity together. No phones, no internet – just a wonderful meal with complete strangers who opened their home to American strangers. That one of a kind feeling was hard to put into words.

They prepared hearty soups, fruits, sweet deserts. We brought them balloons and even a few firecrackers to celebrate Christmas with them. We learned about their trade, family history and fell in love with their 99 year old great, great grandmother.

When we arrived in Antigua, we learned about the city in the central highlands of Guatemala famous for its well-preserved Spanish Baroque-influenced architecture as well as a number of ruins of colonial churches. It served as the capital of the Kingdom of Guatemala. It has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The smell of firewood wafted from the distance. Volcanos peppered the landscape. Our hotel was a rare bird sanctuary open to fly and sing throughout the grounds. We felt a deep connection to nature and by this point in the trip we all felt a deep sense of peace. We were laughing all week with the kids.

The Guatemalan people have reconditioned old American school busses into tricked-out wild, monster-truck-like colored public transportation. We rode a bus to visit Valhala farms to explore the world’s greatest macadamia nuts.

We visited the Antigua coffee plantation and spent a few hours immersed in the “seed to cup” production of the world’s most beloved bean. Starbucks is the largest customer of Antigua coffee.

Hiking and horseback riding up Volcano Picaya was thrilling and made for some spectacular photographs. The leader of our caravan, Avram, led us to the top. Pacaya is an active complex volcano in Guatemala, which first erupted approximately 23,000 years ago and has erupted at least 23 times since the Spanish invasion of Guatemala. Pacaya rises to an elevation of 2,552 metres (8,373 ft).

After being dormant for over 70 years, it began erupting vigorously in 1961 and has been erupting frequently since then.

Much of its activity is Strombolian, but occasional Plinian eruptions also occur, sometimes showering the area of the nearby Departments with ash.

Pacaya is a popular tourist attraction. Pacaya lies 30 kilometers (19 miles) southwest of Guatemala City and close to Antigua. The volcano sits inside the Escuintla Department. So far, the last activity reported has been the eruption that peaked on March 2, 2014 causing ash to rain down in Guatemala City, Antigua and Escuintla.

As many of you have read on my blog, our journeys are not typical. We are not the kind that checks into a resort, never to leave the property. We explore the heart and try to get to the soul of a country to share with our children how the rest of the world truly lives. My blog is more than a showcase for my professional business, it’s a recording of my life and times and as a photographer and writer. I also hope you consider some of these locations for your next journey. Thanks for reading along!

Planet Dean – Premium Galactic Bar Mitzvah

Planet Dean – Premium Galactic Bar Mitzvah

Documenting the life and (incredible) times of this superstar family has been one exciting journey after another. This past decade, we’ve gone crazy for Averymania, danced with the natives in the Jungles of Morgan, and taken the Q Train to every stop in NYC. So, the only logical place left to celebrate was… outer space…the final frontier…Planet Dean!

The was quite possibly the best idea to throw an out of this world, interstellar Bar Mitzvah

So many creative moments came together quickly once the rocketship of ideas blasted off and touched-down on Planet Dean. The Executive Director of Mission Control, Anthony Taccetta, ensured all systems were GO. 10, 9, 8, …. 3, 2, 1 BLAST OFF!  There is so much love for this family and everyone joined the mothership to celebrate the completion of their quadruple collection of Bat and Bar Mitzvah Missions!

Jessie Blake’s Fashion Mitzvah

Jessie Blake’s Fashion Mitzvah

As the daughter of one of the best event décor and designers in the world, (Jennifer Gould), Jessie made her Mitzvah debut in high style and set the bar to a new level with her fashion shoot. High above the city on the rooftop of the Conrad Hotel and surrounding riverside hotspots, Jessie added supermodel swagger into these photographs.

Later, with help from superstar beauty/fashion event makeup queen Carli Bybel, Jessie stunned her friends and guests with a look that said, “let’s party!”

After photographing her older brother Ryan (blog post here), it was her turn in the spotlight. Hearty Mazel Tov once again to my good friends Jennifer and Andrew and their family in celebration of Jessie – what an experience!

MICHAEL JURICK’S 2018 YEAR IN PICTURES

MICHAEL JURICK’S 2018 YEAR IN PICTURES

The REWIND project is a huge curation effort of an entire year’s worth of photographs. Hundreds of thousands of photographs are distilled down to a collection that show a perspective of life from my nook here in NYC.  My deepest thanks to each of you who have been part of this journey.

I produce this blog post each year because it enables me to tell a cohesive story of the artists, creatives and clients who collaborated together for the joy of making life’s great milestones truly unforgettable.

In order to grow as an artist, you have to look back at your celebrations from the past year. As 2018 came to a close, I felt like it was a rocket ship of activity. We were making portraits in all locations around the city – in the pouring rain, in the gorgeous bright sunshine and everywhere in between. I am a portrait artist at my core. And oh yeah, can we talk about that cover photo of Eden Jurick above? I captured her at the base of Volcano Pacaya in Gautemala during a raging setting sun this past December. #Epic

I’m super proud of the portraits we created in the past year and that’s why I wanted to kick off the year in review with a look back at New York portraits, Jurick style.

Some of you know about my son Jonah Jurick’s musical alias Hei$t – he’s been steadily working though almost a dozen tracks which was a big story for him last year and I’m psyched to share a few of my favorites below – especially since we collaborated on the cover of his single, “Daydreamin” photographed in Guatemala. Check out his latest tracks “Daydreamin” and “$ix Currencies” right here:

A Star is Born

Shooting for a perfect holiday card concept – this one couldn’t be “sweeter”!

COLOR INFRARED

Another exciting area of artistic focus last year was my work with color infrared, a logical extension of my fine art infrared work.

From Montana to Lake Como to Jerusalem,
all images are striking in color infrared for their other-worldly look

MESMERIZING ROOMS

We are so grateful to work with so many talented artists, caterers, creatives, producers and planners in this industry. Your event really comes together when you and your guests walk into the room for the first time and just say, “WOW”. Preserving that is so important to us and we take capturing each and every detail seriously – from the wide angle to the shot of the oyster bar. We capture every investment detail you make.

During last year’s Phish show on new year’s eve at MSG, I captured this photograph through heart-shaped diffraction glasses which transform an already incredible scene into multicolored, heart-filled wonderland! Had to share this.

PARTAY

Once the planning is finally in place, it’s time to cut loose and really celebrate. We collectively pour so much of our heart, soul, mental and emotional energy into these parties and I’ll be darned if I don’t want to make it look as good as possible long after the confetti is swept away.

At this year’s New Orleans Jazz & Heretige Festival, I captured a few incredible moments between artist and fans. Here’s Matt Shultz of Cage the Elephant riding a wave of fan frenzy.

Legendary moment with Steven Tyler of Aerosmith singing “Dream On” at the foot of the stage on top his white piano to nearly 70,000 fans.

Who doesn’t like a beautiful brazillian marching band at your Bar Mitzvah?

Sometimes it’s the most tender and quiet moments from a party that you remember most.

TRAVEL BLISS

Some of my most personal work is captured during times of travel and this year’s crop includes stops in Guatemala, Colombia, Mallorca, Coppenhagen, Glacier National Park and our very own backyard here atop 30 Rock at the Rainbow Room in NYC. I am beyond grateful to have these opportunities to direct the camera upon such gorgeous scenery. Over the years, I’ve created a pretty good size collection of fine art photographs. If any of the photographs speak to you, please let us know so we can produce gorgeous wall art for your home or office. We are also planning the 2019 gallery show. Stay tuned!

Travel by bike is the best way to see the cities you visit. You cover the most ground in the shortest time – plus you wiz by traffic which puts you in great mind. We strongly encourage bike tours for your next city destination.

Rafa Nadal’s brand new world-class tennis academy in Malloraca, Spain. It’s a tennis academy on the edge of the earth for serious players and fanatics.

It’s the simplest of photographs that carry the greatest weight and depth.

SUMMARY

The REWIND project is a huge curation effort of an entire year’s worth of photographs. Hundreds of thousands of photographs are distilled down to a collection that show a perspective of life from my nook here in NYC.  My deepest thanks to each of you who have been part of this journey.  I produce this blog post each year because it enables me to tell a cohesive story of the artists, creatives and clients who collaborated together for the joy of making life’s great milestones truly unforgettable.

I’m going to buck tradition this year and instead of showcasing my top 5 photographs of the year, I’m only picking 1. The reason is that while I’m proud of so many images in this years amazing collection, one truly stands out. It’s of course, Eden at the base of Volcano Pacaya in Guatemala.

LOOKING FORWARD

Huge thanks to everyone on our team – Adri Hidvegi, Nathaniel Johnston, Mike Reid, Bia Sampaio, Joe Spiteri, Mark Sweeney, Kali Ventresca and of course the wonder woman herself, my wife Gal. If you don’t see a particular photograph from our time together, please accept my sincerest apologies.

My deepest thanks to each of you who have taken the time to look back with me. Cheers to a 2019 filled with family, friends, art, travel and life’s greatest celebrations! See you all on the dance floor!

So much reflection and work goes into producing this each and it would mean alot to leave me a comment or share using the social links below. Thank you!
