When I captured this photo in the Summer of 2007, I was incredibly excited to see her perform live. I was shooting the Virgin Music Festival in Baltimore and she was the on the bill of almost 50 artists, she was the one I wanted to see most. Her album Back to Black was one of the biggest at the time and I couldn’t get enough of her voice.

Her voice had a sound that came from a place of distant memory, something familiar, something vintage, something deeply emotional, and something so authentic. I must have listened to that album every day that summer.

Amy was very playful onstage during this performance and still looked great, albeit a bit thin. Her voice was strong and I knew we were witnessing a true legend in the making. Rest in Peace Amy, we will miss you.
